Initiate & Participate in Network Events
Whether or not the idea of a networking happy hour makes you want to run for the hills or grab a nametag and make a few rounds, it is essential that you participate in networking events. In the early days of my business, I would spread myself so thin. From Wednesday to Friday evening, I would be driving across town, eager to show my face at every luncheon and after-work networking happy hour. Eventually, I realized there had to be a more efficient way to leverage networking events.
Networking events are in-person or virtual gatherings designed for people from similar backgrounds and industries to meet, exchange ideas, and build relationships. Events such as trade shows, networking coffees, and formal conferences are invaluable because they allow working professionals to forge valuable connections beyond the confines of their own company or team. Furthermore, these events offer ample opportunity to discover relevant industry trends and even obtain new clients or referrals. While networking may have a cheesy reputation, at its core this is simply a process of meeting and getting to know people who you can hopefully help and can help you in return.
By participating in the right networking events, you can:
- Expand your network
- Gain insights and knowledge
- Elevate your professional profile
- And most importantly, develop meaningful relationships
How to Pick the Right Networking Events
In order to approach the right people as referral partners, you need to be in the right places. An easy way to do this is to streamline the type and quality of networking events you are attending. Attending a networking event is an investment and will cost you time, energy, and potentially even money. Before determining which events to participate in, be sure to contemplate the following:
Industry relevance: Make sure the event aligns with your career goals.
